Gwen Witzel is an experienced Family Nurse Practitioner who provides primary care in rural ND. She is medical staff in a Rural Health clinic and Critical Access hospital. Gwen has received awards for Excellence in Diabetes Care. Also Ms Witzel was honored as the 2009 North Dakota Rural Health Provider of theYear, an award sponsored by the Center for Rural Health and UND Medical School.
Gwen has been active in health policy, working to eliminate barriers to NP practice and improve access to care. She is a co-founder of the ND Nurse Practitioner Association, and with the coordination of NP efforts, has made important legislative changes for ND. Ms. Witzel was one of the NPs who were instrumental in passing legislation to recognize NPs as primary care providers for Medicaid recipients, NP universal signature with Department of Transportation, and most recently elimination of physician collaborative agreement allowing North Dakota NPs to have independent practice effective August 1st, 2011.
Gwen is devoted to education of NPs and serves as a clinical preceptor for students in Family NP and Geriatric NP programs.
Gwen Witzel has served as the AANP ND State Representative for 9 years. She currently holds a seat on the AANP Board of Directors as the Region 8 Director representing six states; ND, SD, WY,CO, MT, UT.
Witzel and her husband reside near Langdon, ND.
