Lenora Lorenzo is empanelled as a PCP and the team leader/innovator of the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program for Diabetes at the Veterans Administration (VA) Honolulu, Hawaii. The multidisciplinary CDM program integrates clinical management and self management with health promotion behavioral techniques such as Change Theory, Motivational Interviewing, and Action Plans.
Dr Lorenzo earned a doctorate of nursing practice from the University of South Alabama in Mobile in 2011; a master of science degree in health field administration from Central Michigan University Mount Pleasant in 1993, followed in 1996 by a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa for a dual program of Gerontological and Family Nurse Practitioner; and her BSN from the University of Hawaii Manoa in 1976. She is a board certified NP in Family (FNP), Gerontological (GNP), Advanced Diabetes Management (ADM-NP) as well as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) since 1996.
Dr Lorenzo has enjoyed a 35-year career in nursing, encompassing emergency, critical and general care, hospital and long term care supervisor and educator. She served 15 years as an NP PCP and DM specialist. She is an Adjunct Nursing Faculty at the University of Hawaii and has served as faculty at Hawaii Pacific University, University of Phoenix, Leeward Community College and Kapiolani Community College for graduate and undergraduate nursing. She has done podium presentations for the Hawaii Nurses Association (HNA), AANP, California Association of Family Physicians, American Association of Physicians Assistants and the Guam Nurses Association. She is Co-founder of the Hawaii Association of Professional Nurses and the VA Advance Practice Nurse Council, which she chairs.
Dr Lorenzo served as elected AANP Region 9 Director 2009 – 2013 and the AANP Hawaii State Representative 1999-2009. She served as the elected President of HNA 2001 –2003 and as an HNA BOD for 10 years. She is a member of AANP, Sigma Theta Tau International and serves as a member of the APN Barriers Committee for the Hawaii Center for Nursing, and the Hawaii Board of Nursing, Nursing Advisory Committee since 1977. She has received numerous awards including HNA 1990 Excellence in Nursing Practice and the 2001 Nurse of the Year. She was awarded the 1996 Governors Kilohana Award for Outstanding Volunteerism and featured in the Honolulu Advertiser Faces of Aloha 1988: "Lenora Lorenzo a Self Made Woman". She and her husband have enjoyed 35 years together with 2 grown children. She is a passionate orchid enthusiast, surfer and an accomplished hula dancer.
