How many awards are given?
Two awards may be given per state. One award focuses on the nurse practitioner and the other on a nurse practitioner advocate. If the situation warrants a tie, two awards may be given in one or both categories.
Who is eligible to receive these awards?
The NP State Award for Excellence is given annually to an NP in each state who has demonstrated excellence in NP clinical practice.
The Advocate State Award for Excellence is given annually to an individual in each state who has made a significant contribution toward increasing awareness and acceptance of NPs. Examples of past recipients of this award have been physicians, legislators, educators, etc. NPs are also eligible for the advocate award for non-clinical practice initiatives related to leadership, precepting, policy, politics, research, education, or community affairs.
Current AANP state representatives and board members are not eligible to receive a State Award for Excellence during their term of office.
Do you have to be a member of AANP to nominate or to be nominated?
No, neither the nominator nor nominee has to be an AANP member.
How are people nominated?
On August 12, 2009, the Call for Nominations is emailed to all AANP members, published in AANP SmartBrief and on the AANP Website. Regular reminders are published. All nominations must be submitted electronically using the official AANP State Award for Excellence Nomination Form. Nominations must be received by October 12, 2009.
How is the award winner chosen?
The AANP State Representative organizes a selection committee of individuals inside and outside the NP community to select the winner(s) from their state. Committee should utilize a blind review process for nominations. Nominees should be ranked and a winner determined.
How is the winner notified?
The State Representative will contact the winner(s) when selected, and then AANP will send congratulatory letters to the winners. AANP will contact the nominator of those who are not award recipients to let them know. The nominees not selected to receive awards will not be contacted directly by AANP since many times the nominee is unaware of the nomination.
