Hurricane Katrina has resulted in an aftermath of extensive devastation. The needs of residents in the affected areas are overwhelming. AANP realizes that many nurse practitioners would like to volunteer their services and encourages them to do so.
The Office of the Surgeon General has asked AANP to help identify nurse practitioners who are willing and available to assist as needed in the gulf coast region and other locations where victims of Hurricane Katrina are being temporarily placed. Please click here for further details and to access the response form. If you have questions, please contact AANP at npresponse@aanp.org.
Please note that volunteers are being asked by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to not travel to areas affected by Hurricane Katrina without having been dispatched by local and/or state authorities.
For nurse practitioners residing in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and wishing to volunteer, please contact the following in your state as well as checking with your local health department and hospitals:
Louisiana
Public Health Department - 225-763-5763
Mississippi
Board of Nursing - 601-987-4188
Alabama
Alabama Emergency Management Agency
Alabama Homeland Security
For those who wish to make monetary contributions to aid Katrina's victims, donations can be made to many organizations. One to consider is the CDC Foundation's Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund. This fund enables public health agencies to purchase urgently needed equipment and supplies for disaster relief when the normal requisition process would take too long or would not work at all. Information about the fund, including how to make tax-deductible contributions is available at www.cdcfoundation.org/pages.html?page=283
