Once a candidate has successfully been certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program they may hold themselves out to the public as a certified adult, gerontologic or family nurse practitioner. In this light, a procedure is in place for consumers and others to bring complaints concerning certificant conduct. A summary of this procedure may be found on the certification program website and a copy of the entire procedure may be obtained by requesting a copy from the Certification Program. Cause for disciplinary action include such things as fraud, misrepresentation of the credential, conviction of a felony or other crime of moral turpitude related to professional practice, gross negligence or willful misconduct in the performance of the profession.
