Honors Dinner

2nd Annual Honors Dinner

It is time to save the date in your new 2012 calendars.

Each year, hundreds of AANP members quietly and generously provide outstanding work and service. The AANP Foundation is preparing now for the second annual Honors Dinner, which is to be held at Sea World in Orlando, Florida on June 21st to recognize exceptional NP service.

In conjunction with the AANP's 27th National Conference, the dinner presented by Pharmavite, will provide an evening of entertainment, food, and a tribute to three of the outstanding NPs providing services domestically and abroad.

Two awards will be given for international humanitarian work. The first will acknowledge member excellence in disaster relief or other volunteer efforts where short-term (one month or less) volunteer services have been provided in clinical experience, leadership or education. The second will recognize long-term (over one month) international contributions. This award will honor a member who has demonstrated altruism, vision, leadership and dedication - making a lasting difference.

The third "Domestic Humanitarian Award" will go to a NP who has made a substantial and positive impact on the health of a special community or patient group within the United States.

Nominations should be made in writing no later than March 9, 2012 and include a letter (maximum 2 pages, double-spaced) explaining how the candidate meets the award criteria and pertinent data (limited to two additional pages) including tools, teaching displays, pictures, or other material to support the nomination letter. Letters and supporting materials should be emailed to the AANP Foundation, attention Margaret Crump at Foundation@aanp.org.

Simply Health

"Changing Lives, One at a Time"

The AANP Foundation developed Simply Health in Practice (SHIP) as an educational initiative for Nurse Practitioners and their patients to address chronic disease, obesity, and to promote healthy lifestyles.

Since the launch of SHIP last June, the program has been working on the development of an interactive website as a go-to resource for NPs and their patients. As this program cornerstone develops, information provided will include educational materials for downloading to use within clinic practice and at home; interactive games for parents and children to learn together; and resources (through on-site links) to other health education information.

To date, critical underwriting has been provided from Truvia as a Presenting Sponsor, with financial support from Novartis and Pharmavite. Prior to full website development and marketing, additional contributors are needed at the $7,500 level.

Website contributor benefits include linkage of company wellness information to SHIP's site and member marketing through SmartBrief (60,000 recipients), E-Bulletin (34,000 recipients) and Foundations newsletter (34,000 readers).

Unhealthy lifestyles can be changed with the right support, and the AANP Foundation recognizes that NPs are the best resource in providing patient assistance through effective communication, increased awareness of healthy behaviors and putting new behaviors into practice.

The SHIP website is close to moving off the drawing board and into your office. It is intended to assist NPs to be wellness models and to help others - changing one life at a time.

Vision for Leadership

Growing Scholarships & Grants
in 2012

"Providing maximum scholarships and grants for AANP members" is the goal of AANP Foundation's incoming president James LaVelle Dickens, RN, MSN, FNP-C, FAANP. "It is all about serving the members of AANP to the best of our ability," shares Dickens. As a Commander with the U.S. Public Health Service, his experience with leadership makes it clear that the AANP Foundation's mission is the driving force behind all of the programs, activities and fundraising.

James observes that the AANP Foundation has diverse activities and opportunities that complement the membership side of AANP, because the people served are the same. The AANP Foundation was created in 1998 as a separate entity with its own board of directors, budget and IRS status - to advance the role of AANP member nurse practitioners through the support of education, research and practice for the improvement of the public's health.

Passing Gavel

Outgoing AANP Foundation board president Tom Mackey receives a gift and heartfelt appreciation for his numerous years of service on the board of directors. Also shown is AANP Foundation Executive Director Kay Todd and incoming board president James Dickens.

How this is accomplished is determined by the AANP Foundation's board of directors, and the objectives include:

  • Provide value to AANP members through demonstrated accomplishments
  • Attract and retain high-quality sponsors and supporters
  • Expand relationships with others in order the grow the NP profession
  • Increase public awareness and support for the NP profession

At the December board of directors meeting, authority was passed from outgoing AANP Foundation President Tom Mackey to Dickens. Accepting the gavel, Dickens invited the board of directors to add value and advance the mission of the AANP Foundation.

"It is a challenging and exciting time," says James. "We are committed to increasing funding made available for AANP member grants and scholarships. There is much to be done this year."

Leaving a Legacy

A billboard once said, "There are people, things and ideas." That concept can also apply to leaving a legacy through planned giving.

Planned giving is a method of supporting non-profits that enables philanthropic individuals to make more significant gifts than they might normally designate from their annual income.

When we think about passing on our life savings, it gives pause to consider whom and what we want to share. A third concept is a cause, an idea, a living legacy - something that may surpass all intended good will. Charities can be named as beneficiaries on life insurance policies and retirement plans.

We encourage you to contemplate what gives meaning to your life and those around you. Should you want more information on the various options available, feel free to contact Kay Todd, AANP Foundation Executive Director at 512-276-5905 or Foundation@aanp.org.
