S 3463 Medicare Diabetes Prevention Act of 2012

U.S. Senators Al Franken (D-MN), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced Medicare Diabetes Prevention Act, a bipartisan bill to require Medicare Fee-for-Service to provide reimbursement for the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), which would allow seniors to gain access to a proven program to prevent the onset of Diabetes.

Based on estimates contained in the UnitedHealth Center for Health Reform and Modernization's Working Paper on Diabetes and a report by the Urban Institute, it is expected the DPP could save the federal government approximately $61 Billion over ten years if offered in the Medicare program and $142 Billion over ten years if offered in both the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
