J.D., LL.M., FAANP(H)
Ms. Safriet served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School from 1988 to 2007. She is currently teaching as a Visiting Professor of Health Law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. Professor Safriet was selected as the Inaugural Honorary Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners based upon her many years of support and advocacy for nurse practitioners. Her esteemed career as an advocate of nurse practitioners started with her seminal paper in the Yale Law Journal in 1993 entitled Health Care Dollars and Regulatory Sense: The Role of Advanced Practice Nursing. This publication began the current conversation of the value of advanced practice nursing from a quality and economic perspective. Her most recent work is published in the groundbreaking IOM report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health entitled Federal Options for Maximizing the Value of Advanced Practice Nurses in Providing Quality, Cost Effective Health Care. Largely due to this important paper, nurse practitioners were given the recognition needed to become providers in the Affordable Care Act. At AANP, she has served as a consultant on regulatory issues, plenary speaker on topics of vital concern to our members, and has assisted with selection of organizational leaders. Professor Safriet continues to write legal opinions on local, state, and federal levels that voice support for important issues, such as removing regulatory barriers to NP practice and reimbursement. It is an honor to award honorary fellowship to this most deserving friend of nurse practitioners.
