I believe the biggest challenge facing nurse practitioners in the delivery of health care in Alabama is removing barriers to improve access to care and health outcomes for the populations we serve. Working together at the state and national levels to enact incremental change can have a huge impact on outcomes for the patients, families, and caregivers we serve. Because the challenges and obstacles are great, strengthening the relationships with our legislatures, allies, contributors, and other healthcare colleagues is critical to successfully removing scope of practice restrictions. As the next Alabama State Representative, I commit to representing the interests of AANP, its members, and the community at large, including continued efforts to remove practice barriers.
Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs; Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner
During the past three years, I have had the opportunity to serve in several leadership roles. I currently serve on the Alabama Board of Nursing Collaborative Practice Advisory Council, and I am the Immediate Past President of the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA). Prior to leading NPAA as President, I served as Vice President of Membership. I have served as the Advanced Practice Nurse Representative for the Alabama Council of the Emergency Nurses Association and the Nurse Practitioner Representative for the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
I believe the biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade is removing barriers to improve access to care and health outcomes for the populations we serve. To address this issue, I believe AANP should continue to provide guidance and support to state nurse practitioner organizations with their efforts to modernize outdated licensure laws.
As a visionary nursing leader, I exhibit consistent personal and professional accountability, including integrity, excellence, professionalism, and service. I demonstrate unwavering trust and transparency to nursing and non-nursing colleagues. I am an excellent communicator with the ability to build relationships and influence others. Additionally, I am an analytical thinker who is disciplined to follow through and elicit the input and assistance of others, when necessary, to complete the task at hand. For example, during my term as President of the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA), I advocated heavily for passage of the Signature Authority Bill. I drafted multiple legislative updates and calls to action that were disseminated via web announcements, Face Book postings, and emails to NPAA members and followers. I also worked with a team of NPs to educate legislatures and advocate for passage the bill in person during the 2018 Alabama legislative session. Additionally, I collaborated with and garnered the support of other health professionals and organizations that advocated for passage of the bill. The Signature Authority Bill (House Bill 429) was subsequently passed into law in May 2018. Now, Alabama NPs and CNMs have the ability to “treat the paperwork” for the care they provide.
I am fully committed to advancing AANP’s mission and strategic plan. As a leading administrator overseeing over 2,400 nursing students and managing over 600 clinical affiliations, I exhibit personal and professional accountability in educating current and future NP students. My unique background of creating leading, innovative NP programs has empowered graduates to deliver high-quality healthcare to some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations in the challenging healthcare environment of the deep South. As an NP who has always maintained a solid clinical practice while holding key administrative positions, I am sincerely dedicated to our profession. My practice aligns with the AANP mission. I promote high-quality outcomes by providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. I have been proactive in collaborating with NPs and other health professionals in the continuous improvement process of delivering high-quality healthcare. I strive to remove practice barriers and increase access to NP-provided care, particularly through my participation on the Collaborative Practice Advisory Council for the Alabama BON and my leadership role in the NP Alliance of Alabama. Thank you for considering my potential to support the initiatives of AANP.
