AANP/ACNP Leadership Experience

I have served as the AANP Massachusetts State Representative for the past 18 months and will complete my two year term in June of 2020. I have also served on the MCNP Executive Board, the MCNP Legislative Steering Committee and the MCNP Political Action Committee.

Biggest Challenge Facing NPs and How AANP Can Help

One of the greatest challenges facing NPs in the delivery of health care over the next decade is the increased demand for primary and specialty care in increasingly complex patient populations and care environments. I am fearful that the proliferation of NP programs over the past several years may impact the rigor and availability of high quality clinical practicum experiences leaving the next generation of NPs ill prepared to meet these challenges. Further, the productivity requirements of practicing NPs combined with an aging NP workforce, will decrease access to clinical preceptors and mentors. The AANP should take a leading role in providing continuing education that develops and strengthens clinical and professional skills. In addition, partnering with state affiliate organizations to develop a framework for mentoring programs that pair novice NPs with expert NPs should be considered. The AANP is also ideally positioned to bring together leaders across the profession to critically evaluate how the next generation of NPs is educated so that the the quality and safety of NP provided care is never called into question.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

I believe that the success of professional organizations and the profession at large is contingent upon leadership that brings people together, builds consensus when varying opinions challenge the advancement of the work at hand, and recognizes and leverages the skills of team members to fulfill a common goal. I work hard to develop and nurture relationships that are based on trust, and follow through with clear, consistent and effective communication. I am goal oriented, organized and able to prioritize competing work demands. I am most proud of the work that I have done thus far in strengthening the relationship between the MCNP and the AANP by promoting our shared sense of purpose and working with the State Government Affairs team in addition to the National Team to advance FPA in Massachusetts. I have secured Governor’s Proclamations for NP Week for the past two years and collaborated with state NP leaders to identify deserving AANP State Excellence awardees.. In addition, I have functioned in a leadership and mentoring role during the 2019 Health Policy Conference on Capitol Hill Day. I led the Massachusetts Contingency through a number of Congressional visits familiarizing novice NPs with the process.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows:

I believe that the most effective way to advance the AANP Mission and strategic plan is through member education and engagement. The success of the organization is contingent upon a robust and well informed member base. I can influence the member base on a state level through increased efforts to recruit new members and retain old members. I would utilize the following strategies: - Work with other state reps to sponsor regional town meetings/programs that highlight the work of the AANP and invite membership - Serve as Guest Speaker for graduate NP programs to engage new NPs - Represent the AANP at State NP Educational Conference highlighting the work if the AANP and member benefits I believe that is also critical to work with the State NPO (MCNP) to advance FPA in the state and maximize collaboration with the State Government Affairs Team to leverage resources that will increase stakeholder engagement and assist with passage of the NP SAVE Act. I enjoy colleagial relationships with key state NP leaders and am actively involved in the MCNP Legislative Steering Committee, PAC, and Executive Board, positioning me to serve in a leadership and advocacy capacity.
