During the past 2 years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting legislators, administrators and key stakeholders to share knowledge about nurse practitioners and how we can improve the healthcare of our patients in Michigan. I am committed to working to ensure that we are able to practice to the full extent of our education and training as outlined in the Institute of Medicine report. It is important that we strongly advocate for our profession and provide education to others while we remove barriers to health care and improve patient outcomes. Thank you for the opportunity and it would be an honor if you allow me to serve as your State of Michigan Representative for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for another 2 years.

One of the biggest challenges facing Nurse Practitioners in the delivery of health care over the next decade is just making the public knowledgeable about what we do every day in our practice. Whenever I’m in the general public with clothing on that speaks of “NPs”, I always get asked what is an “NP”, I’m always surprised how often that question arises. I believe that most persons especially the elderly don’t know that we exist and that we could serve their healthcare needs. Many people also have trust issues with physicians from a historical perspective and may not want to then go a step further with a provider that they are unsure of their capabilities. As listed in the strategic plan, to increase general knowledge and public awareness about Nurse Practitioners would be a beginning strategy to help us be better defined in the public eyes. I think that AANP is doing a great job with social media and the advertisements. I would suggest that AANP could advertise with large chain grocery stores mailings and maybe billboards. Also make sure that the advertisements have diversity and culturally sensitive to educate all the populations that we serve.
I consider my leadership qualities to parallel with transformational leadership. I will bring my nursing passion and perseverance to achieve high quality health care in agreement with the vision of AANP. I like to place myself in situations to inspire others to achieve their goals. Networking is key when trying to solve problems proactively therefore I try to take advantage of opportunities within our community and state leaders when possible. While working with my nursing committees I make an effort to build quality relationships. Keeping perspective on the mission of the organization as the leader is one of my characteristics that I value. I believe that I must share the vision with the organization in order to be in a leadership position. I have a positive attitude and given the proper tools necessary, I will strive to broaden the scope of practice with advance practice nursing. Lastly, mentoring is vital as a leader and I take pride in mentoring others as well as being willing to be mentored. I used my leadership skills to obtain a board position on the only Michigan Nurse Practitioner organization. I explained how having myself present would improve the communication between AANP and Michigan NPs.
I would like to partner with AANP to collaborate with our State of Michigan legislative stakeholders to promote diversity within our profession, advocate to remove practice barriers and encourage our legislators to support full practice authority for Nurse Practitioners. The work of education has a pivotal role in nursing. Education is used to promote patient safety, improve patient outcomes and has an impact on the development of guidelines for standards of care. Connecting with AANP and utilizing the resources provided would assist in advancing quality health care for all patients. Increasing general knowledge and public awareness about Nurse Practitioners is one of my focuses, I would like to have displays at local churches and grocery stores on the weekends to reach more people. I think that the effort that is put forth during NP week should be carried on throughout the year.
