Joshua Hamilton, DNP, RN-BC, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, CNE, FAANP

Candidate for Nevada State Representative

Campaign Message:

Nearly 25 years ago, I abandoned my pre-med studies, drawn by the compassion, camaraderie and commitment to patient-centered care that was so much more apparent in nursing. That course correction was the best decision of my career! Since then, I’ve taught internationally, mentored hundreds of other nurses and rallied for our cause on the local, national and regional stage. With your support, I’ll apply this same passion and commitment to the important work of AANP. I hope I can count on your vote!

Biggest Challenge Facing NPs and How AANP Can Help

NPs will continue to face scope of practice and regulatory issues, particularly with regard to licensure mobility and unintended "competition" with Medicine. Education, collaboration and policy advocacy are necessary to surmount these obstacles. NPs need to be represented on state boards, legislative committees, and educational advisory boards to ensure that our practice remains relevant, broad and patient-centered. While these are not new issues, there is growing attention to the silos that exist WITHIN our profession. Integrating specialty practices and primary care in educational offerings, formal preparation and continuing education will strengthen the practice of integrated healthcare in the united states. Key opinion leaders need to meet and collaborate with nurses and other healthcare professionals to break down some of the silos and barriers to ensure that patients can access affordable healthcare in a changing context/system.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

I am an inclusive, democratic and transparent leader. I am an effective and candid communicator with expertise in diplomacy, negotiation and conflict resolution. I am well-known in the educational and practice arenas, and I am well-networked within the healthcare system. I have used these skills successfully to build, grow and expand quality NP educational programming, including formal degree preparation and continuing professional education. Most recently, I leveraged my skills and networks to grow an online PMHNP program by more than 1200% over a 10-month period. The graduates of the program practice integrated care in 25+ states in the country, positively impacting families and the communities in which they live.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows:

I am actively striving to be more visible and impactful by participating in the educational work of AANP. I am a member of the 2020 Conference committee, and I have been invited to participate in special projects to develop enduring content for the CE center. I am routinely invited to speak at AANP conferences. My program of applied clinical research has positively impacted my community by helping those with treatment-resistant mental illnesses to get back on track with new treatment options, including medications, counseling/psychotherapy, and somatic therapies. Leading by example, my practice has inspired others' entreprenurial spirit (in an evidence-based context) to take bold steps which will have long-term beneficial effects for our citizens in Nevada. I am a consistent and compelling voice for our state board of nursing, as well as our legislators in this state.
