Shannon Hilton, APRN

Candidate for Alaska State Representative (Incumbent)

Campaign Message:

I would continue to support efforts by the Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association and the APRN Alliance of Alaska to assure that the strategic goals of AANP are moving forward. Additionally, through attendance at state conferences, I would strive to make myself available to discuss AANP's strategic plan with members and promote membership to nonmembers. I will work with AANP to bridge the gap with the NPOs in the state to work towards payment parity, as well as serve as a guide to the NPOs by monitoring legislation to assure that provider-neutral language is included in all upcoming and previous legislation. I will also continue to contact legislators to discuss ongoing health care needs of our communities and how nurse practitioners play a critical role in assuring access to care for many patients.

Current Professional Position

Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care.

AANP/ACNP Leadership Experience

I have been AANP Alaska State Representative for two terms. I have also been a member of the APRN Alliance of Alaska, Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association (ANPA). I served as an executive board member to ANPA from 2014 to 2016 in the capacity as president elect (2014), president (2015) and immediate past president (2016). Other leadership roles include being a "Team Leader" for medical mission trips to Guatemala with an organization called Refuge International based in Texas.

Biggest Challenge Facing NPs and How AANP Can Help

One of the largest issues I think facing nurse practitioners is payment parity. While parity has been accomplished by some states with full practice authority it has not yet been achieved by other states. Payment parity is certainly an issue that faces Alaska nurse practitioners. I would like AANP to provide support in the form of guidance and education on how to approach achieving payment parity for nurse practitioners.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

I will bring my leadership and networking skills to AANP and connect AANP to the Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association. Some initiatives that I have started looking into addressing in the state of Alaska have been payment parity and, currently, addressing the regulation change of the authorization of Home Health by nurse practitioners.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows:
