Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help

In my opinion, the biggest challenge facing nurse practitioners in the delivery of health care are barriers to practice. Restrictions on practice based on the state licensure is an example of a barrier to practice. There is no reason why a NP who receives the same education, training and certification must practice differently depending on the state in which they hold licensure. Healthcare is a precious commodity, not available to all. NPs are poised to offer high-quality healthcare to all. Especially the vulnerable populations that suffer from health disparities. Those populations are often in rural, undeserved areas where NPs are ready and able to serve. The healthcare landscape is rapidly changing. AANP must remain at the table at the local, state and national levels. Fighting for provider neutral language in healthcare legislation, full practice authority in every state, and equal/fair reimbursement for healthcare services will improve access to care for American citizens. These are just a few examples of how AANP can support NPs and the populations they serve.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

I possess strong communication skills, organizational skills, ability to navigate systems and a strong work ethic. I am able to lead by example and serve as a change agent. Recently, my organization had low NP productivity. I collaborated with Naitional APRN Council members to develop an improvement strategy to increase NP productivity. I served as a lead on a multi-facility pilot project to improve local NP productivity. Through education and collaboration with administration, leadership and fellow NPs, the NP productivity went from below national productivity benchmark to meeting national productivity benchmarks. This accomplishment was recognized by the Executive Leadership team. My goal is to always promote NP practice and highlight the work NPs do to increase access and improve outcomes.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows

As the incumbent North Carolina AANP State Liaison, I will continue to work with local NP organizations and Schools of Nursing to increase visibility of AANP and identify issues that impact NP practice. I will make sure those issues and concerns are communicated with the region 4 AANP director. I will participate in AANP educational events and promote these events within the state. I believe my current leadership roles as a AANP State Liaison, National VA APRN Chair, Adjunct faculty at UNC and Duke Schools of Nursing and leadership roles in other national professional nursing organizations, all position me to empower and lead NPs. My passion is elevating the profession and leading by example
