Patients and the general population are still unaware of the role NPs can have in their healthcare. Nurse Practitioners are able to work in primary care and specialty practices to ensure patient receive quality healthcare. AANP should share social media posts, create sponsored ads for social media/ streaming platforms that describe the role of NPs and different specialties NPs work in. The ads could include images of practicing NPs and include testimonials from patients who have received care from an NP. The ads could be run throughout the year instead of only during NP Week. AANP leadership could also increase awareness of the NP role by being active in local and national events that are not specific to NPs and sharing the collaborations via different platforms.
During my career as a Nurse Practitioner I have assisted with the development and implementation of the first PrEP program at a health department in Alabama. I wrote the standard operating procedures and provided training to clinical staff as well as community partners to recruit patients and funding. The PrEP program was started in 2017 and was awarded a Promising Practice in 2018 and was a Model Practice for Implementing a PrEP and hepatitis C program in a Sexual Health Clinic in 2020 by NACCHO. I also assisted with creating templates, providing training to staff, and other technical assistance when a new EMR system was started. I have transitioned to another organization and the EMR templates are still being used within the clinic. The hepatitis C and PrEP programs are still providing services to the community. In addition to my leadership skills, I am flexible and a team player. I am willing to serve in any capacity in order to meet the goal of the organization.
If elected, I would advance AANP’s mission by increasing the reputation, authority and expertise of Nurse Practitioners locally and nationally by continuing to work with non-nursing organizations as a consultant and on behalf of AANP. Working as a consultant will allow me to provide training and technical assistance to clinical staff, including Nurse Practitioners, so they may provide high quality care and decrease disparities related to sexually transmitted infections and HIV. As a state liaison, I could leverage partnerships and relationships that I have to increase awareness of AANP and the role that Nurse Practitioners can have to improve healthcare outcomes and decrease health disparities.
