Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help

Obstacles to the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) practice environment, encompass a range of challenges, including policy constraints that encumber APRN practice, suboptimal relations between APRNs and healthcare administration, resistance from physicians regarding the autonomy of APRN practice, a dearth of comprehensive comprehension of the multifaceted APRN role, and a deficiency in the acknowledgment of their professional contributions. As of my knowledge one of the significant challenges nurse practitioners face in Florida is the scope of practice limitations. In Florida, NPs often have more restricted practice authority compared to some other states. These limitations can include requirements for physician supervision or collaboration, which can hinder NPs' ability to provide healthcare services to their full potential. The AANP, as a national organization representing NPs, could address this issue by working with local NP associations, legislators, and other stakeholders to advocate for changes in state laws and regulations that expand NPs' scope of practice. This may involve efforts to remove or reduce supervision and collaboration requirements. AANP can provide educational resources and information to both NPs and the public to raise awareness about the training, qualifications, and capabilities of nurse practitioners. This can help dispel misconceptions that may contribute to practice restrictions.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

By leveraging my clinical expertise, I will actively participate in AANP's committees and workgroups dedicated to clinical practice and guidelines. This involvement will help in the development of updated and evidence-based clinical guidelines that can improve the quality of care provided by nurse practitioners across the nation. Ethical and Inclusive Leadership are crucial to any organization. Effective leaders must operate with a strong sense of ethics and inclusivity. They should champion diversity, equity, and inclusion within AANP and advocate for these principles in the broader healthcare community. Flexibility and Adaptability is another skill that I would like to use to be prepared to adapt to changes in the regulatory landscape quickly. Laws and regulations may change, and the ability to pivot and adjust advocacy efforts accordingly is critical.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows

If elected, the specific actions I take as a State Liaison, will depend on the current priorities and needs of the region. I would stay flexible and adaptable in my approach. I would establish open lines of communication with AANP's leadership, including regional and national representatives. Collaborate to ensure my initiatives are in sync with AANP's overarching goals. Would Advocate for NP Issues for all nurse practitioners in North Florida by supporting policy changes that align with AANP's advocacy goals. This could involve working with lawmakers and healthcare organizations. Will collaborate with Local NP Associations and will Partner with local NP associations and chapters to enhance networking and education opportunities, as well as to amplify my advocacy efforts. I plan to collect data and feedback from NPs in North Florida to identify specific challenges and opportunities and will use this information to tailor my efforts in line with AANP's goals. I would Support AANP Events and Initiatives by promoting and participating in AANP events, such as conferences and workshops, and all national initiatives.
