Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help

Over the next decade NPs are challenged with an aging population and an aging healthcare workforce. The biggest challenge is being able to deliver care to this population. In many under-served areas of this country NPs are still underutilized. Antiquated practice laws prohibit NPs from delivering high quality health care in areas that need the NP the most. Providing access to a full range of health services for everyone in this country is critical. Full practice authority nationwide will help to with this access. AANP needs to continue to promote the role of the NP and help all states push for and adopt full practice authority.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

The greatest leadership skill that I possess is being able to listen and connect with people. I am able to motivate others and instill a sense of professional responsibility. Over the past few years I have been able to engage with NP students and NP peers to motivate them to join AANP and be professionally involved. I have mentored multiple peers and former students in AANP presentations. Over the last 3 years I have presented a national presentation with a NP peer and/or former student. Two years ago I was recognized by the Mississippi Association of Nurse Practitioners for increasing membership substantially.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows

I will continue to work with NPs and stakeholders throughout Mississippi to increase general knowledge and public awareness about NPs and represent the NP role in a positive manner. I will continue to work with state NPOs and organizations to for continued membership in AANP and increase consensus of AANPs mission. I will work with policy makers to ensure NPs are able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. I will serve as a resource to Mississippi NPs and mentor them in advocacy. I will continue to mentor students to join AANP and will help NP peers share their expertise through presentations or leadership roles within AANP.
