Biggest Challenge Facing Nurse Practitioners and How AANP Can Help

The biggest challenge facing NPs in the delivery of healthcare for the future is a clear understanding of the NP's role. There are many barriers NPs face that prevent them from doing their job to the fullest extent of training and education. AANP can help address this by implementing education initiatives that explain the role of a NP to communities, to patients, to legislators, to healthcare administrators and physicians. Despite our current efforts, there remains a large communication gap. Investment in marketing efforts to highlight what we know is true (i.e. NPs provide high-quality, cost effective care) would be a wonderful way AANP can help. So many of our NPs lack the confidence to explain what they bring to the table. AANP has done a wonderful job with preparing resources and tools that the NP can use to have these conversations. However, many NPs struggle to find this information. Having leaders from AANP implement strategies to get these resources to the NP could move the needle to eliminate barriers preventing full scope of practice.
