Shanna Chapman, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP

Candidate for Region 7 Director

Campaign Message:

When I graduated from UMKC as a FNP and then attended University of Iowa for my DNP, I recognized the importance of health policy. Since 2011, I have been involved with legislation and advocating for NP practices. The Association of Missouri Nurse Practitioners was formed for this reason. As a previous rural, independent clinic owner, I experienced the hardships that NPs face daily in trying to provide the health care that our patients deserve. It is my desire to serve the NPs of Region 7 by educating, empowering, and recognizing NPs as the primary providers that we are. In doing this, my goal is to push NP practices forward, removing barriers, which will enable our patients’ access to care translating to increased patient care outcomes. Please vote for Shanna Chapman - Region 7. I am passionate, enthusiastic, and am ready to work hard for tomorrow’s healthcare and today’s NPs.

Biggest Challenge Facing NPs and How AANP Can Help

Coming from a red state and amid a pandemic, patient outcomes are horrendous due to lack of access to care. We are in unique position to rally nurses across ALL states and demonstrate to legislators the importance of NPs practicing to the full extent of their education and training. We have an opportunity to improve health care with our response during the pandemic. As a previous independent, rural primary care clinic owner, I experienced the barriers faced while providing high quality healthcare meeting my patients' needs. I am passionate about educating and working to remove barriers to provide patients with the care they deserve. AANP can show the organizational support and strength needed to push APN practices to improve healthcare outcomes. NPs should be visible to the public and transparent demonstrating NP improved healthcare outcomes and to provide support to NPs that are working everyday. Encouraging NPs to unite and work collaboratively to improve healthcare for tomorrow.

Example of Initiative or Outcome of Leadership

One skill that I possess is being a goal driven, highly organized motivator. I believe as a leader, it is imperative to identify the strengths in your teammates and capitalize on their strengths. I identified Missouri as being behind in APN practices due to the lack of a dedicated NP organization during my FAANP mentorship. I personally took the initiative to form the Association of Missouri Nurse Practitioners (AMNP) because of recognizing this need AMNP was born in 2015 and continues to thrive and flourish today as a successful NPO. AMNP continues to serve Missouri NPs with leadership through lobbyists, conferences, support, membership, and advocacy committees. This is one of the hardest things I've ever done but by far my finest accomplishment. I look forward to bringing these assets to AANP to motivate, unite, and move practices forward in Region 7.

If Elected, I Propose to Advance the AANP Mission as Follows:

The AANP Mission & Strategic Plan resonates within me. The ability for patients to have full and direct access to high quality health care and able to choose NPs as their health care providers is imperative. Healthcare outcomes in Region 7 are dismal and could be greatly improved by Full Practice Authority. It would be my goal to unite NPs from Region 7 by providing support and guidance. Once united with an increase in membership, I propose that Region 7 remove practice barriers and increase access to care for our patients. In my leadership role, I would campaign to increase the knowledge and public awareness about NPs as well as promoting NPs as primary providers in Region 7.
