Guidelines: AANP Communities Pilot Survey Program

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) is pleased to pilot a new opportunity for researchers to collect data from nurse practitioners (NPs). For 2026, the new AANP Communities Pilot Survey Program replaces an older program focused on data collection at AANP’s National Conference.

Twice per year, researchers may apply to survey members of up to three AANP Communities. Applicants can choose which AANP Communities are most relevant to their research interests. AANP will post successful applicants’ recruitment messages and survey links up to three times in each selected Community, for a field period of no more than one month.

Applications will be reviewed in March and September. If multiple surveys are approved for the same Community in the same cycle, AANP will stage them within the six-month cycle to avoid overlap. AANP will select up to four survey projects for each cycle during the pilot year.

This program is most appropriate for researchers who wish to independently construct, field and analyze their surveys. Researchers and organizations looking for more support are encouraged to check out NPInfluence.

AANP makes no assurances regarding the response rate or number of surveys completed but notes that response rates will be higher with respondent payments of at least $5-$10. Compensating respondents for their time and expertise is a best practice in survey research. Random drawings or sweepstakes are not allowed.

  • Application Requirements

Please consider reviewing the AANP Communities Pilot Survey Program Grading Rubric before starting your application.

Approval is dependent on the successful submission and review of a proposal (Item 1 below) and supporting documents (Items 2-7 below). All studies must receive internal review board (IRB) approval or an exemption prior to qualifying for final approval.

    Applicants must include:

    1. Proposal.
      1. The proposal should be no more than eight pages including citations and contain the following:
        1. Purpose statement — describe the motivation and objectives for the proposed study.
        2. Methodology — explain the study design, including your choice of 1-3 AANP Communities, the data you will collect and the analytic approach. Explain approach to respondent payments and how they will be administered.
        3. Expected outcomes and impact — describe the expected output or outcomes and how they have the potential to positively impact the NP role.
    2. Sources of Support.
      1. If a study has one or more sources of support, submit a maximum of one page with:
        1. Source name.
        2. Source type (e.g., grant, award).
        3. Reference number, if applicable.
      2. If a study has no sources of support, please submit a statement acknowledging that there are no sources of support for the study.
    3. Survey Instrument (Questionnaire) and Related Materials.
      1. A copy of the entire instrument or questionnaire must be submitted, or the application will be considered incomplete. Survey instruments should be a reasonable length.
      2. A copy of three outreach messages to be posted in the selected Communities (initial outreach and two follow-ups), containing planned respondent payments and the text “AANP is not the sponsor of this research and bears no liability for the conduct or methodology.” See an example of language recruitment here.
      3. The cover letter and informed consent language that precedes the survey can be one document but must include the following:
        1. Company or university affiliation.
        2. Purpose, eligibility criteria, methodology, duration and risks and benefits of the study.
        3. Statement of voluntary consent.
        4. Statement of confidentiality.
        5. Statement of IRB approval.
        6. Contact information.
    4. IRB Approval.
      1. If the study has already received IRB approval or an exemption, submit a copy of the letter with the application. If the study is pending IRB approval or an exemption, submit a statement acknowledging this and agree to submit a copy of the approval or exemption before the survey agreement with AANP can be signed.
    5. Biosketches or CVs.
      1. Both the principal investigator (PI) and applicants who are not the PI must submit a biosketch or CV. Biosketch/CV should not exceed five pages and must include the following:
        1. Name.
        2. Position title.
        3. Education.
        4. Employment.
        5. Completed research publications.
    6. STUDENTS ONLY: Faculty Advisor Approval.
      1. All students must fill out and have their advisor sign the Faculty Advisory Approval Form. Applications submitted by students without an advisor form will not be accepted.
  • Application Submission and Review

All applications are reviewed by members of the AANP Research Committee and the AANP Research and Practice Departments. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please complete the following steps to successfully submit your application:

    1. Submit all components of the application through Qualtrics between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15 for the March review cycle, and between July 1 and Aug. 15 for the September review cycle.

      Apply now!
    2. Pay the nonrefundable application review fee by check or credit card. The application fee can be paid before or after the application is submitted. This is a separate process from the application form and must be paid by the submission deadline.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection by the end of the review month (Sept. 30 or March 31). Applicants may be accepted conditional on making a minor change to their application. Applicants who are not accepted are encouraged to apply again in a later review cycle.

  • Fees

The application fee for this program is nonrefundable. If a survey proposal is accepted, AANP will post the survey and grant the researcher optional membership in the 1-3 Communities they are surveying in. Again, AANP makes no assurances regarding the response rate or number of surveys completed. For nonmembers, the fee also confers AANP membership.

    • AANP Members: $200.
    • Nonmembers: $300.

Applicants to AANP’s research grants may not include this AANP survey program as the intended data source for proposed grant projects, as this would be a conflict of interest.

    Pay the review fee

  • AANP Review of Final Product

If the final research project is intended for publication as a peer-reviewed journal article or as a report on any website, AANP should receive a draft of that article for review and approval prior to its submission for publication. AANP will return any comments within 30 days. All data collectors are required to submit their final research projects to AANP within a year.
