Jamaica Association of Nurse Practitioners 40th Anniversary Conference - July 12-14, 2017
Over 90 participants attended the Jamaica Association of Nurse Practitioners (JANP) conference at Jewel Runaway Bay Beach and Golf Resort, Jamaica. The conference was a celebration of 40 years of the nurse practitioner role in the island. JANP has been an affiliate member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) since 2013. Dr. Madrean Schober, President of Schober Global Healthcare Consulting and Dr. Cindy Cooke, Immediate Past President of AANP, were invited keynote speakers for the conference.
Emphasizing the theme ‘ Honouring Our Past, Embracing Our Future’ the conference commenced with speakers talking on topics such as nursing leadership and mentorship along with the realities of new frontiers in advanced practice nursing in Jamaica. Clinical topics included HIV and pregnancy, integrated/complementary medical options, cosmetic surgery and acupuncture for pain. Workshops on wound closure/suturing and ECG were also available.
Preceding the conference, Dr. Schober and Dr. Cooke accompanied by JANP President, Mrs. Heather Henry-McGrath, and Treasurer, Ms. Yvonne Morrison made visits to the offices of:
A visit was made to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona School of Nursing near Kingston, Jamaica. The visit included a tour of the UWI Mona campus and meetings with UWI SON leadership to discuss the NP educational program in Jamaica. Courtesy visits were also made to a historic nurses retirement house in Kingston and the Granville Place of Safety for adolescent girls ages 8-18. Another highlight visit was to the home of Mrs. Rosetta Boswell Green, a Jamaican NP pioneer.
The genuine and warm hospitality of the Jamaican nurse practitioners and people provided an opportunity to compare the similarities of nurse practitioner practice in Jamaica to advanced nursing practice internationally.
