Funding Nurse Practitioners (NPs) Who Seek to Preserve NP History
Our profession's rich history paints a picture of the great successes that NPs have achieved and the invaluable contributions we have made to the health of our nation. Preserving documents on a state-by-state, national and international level will help increase visibility to this information and serve as inspiration for future successes. Now is your opportunity to help gather and preserve NP history by taking advantage of these new American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) grant opportunities.
National NP History Grant — Now Closed
Applications closed on April 25, 2022 at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT).
The National NP History Grant award is a funding opportunity for a research or scholarly project focused on the historical foundations of the NP movement at a national or international level. Grants are available to AANP members of any type (including student or associate members) in good standing and demonstrating expertise — or interest in — historical research. History projects should contribute novel findings to the body of existing knowledge as new, original research related to and of importance to the NP role.
Awardees may receive up to $5,000 in grant funding. Only completed applications will be accepted and reviewed.

National NP History Grant Details and Eligibility Requirements
Grant Award
Awardees may receive up to $5,000 in grant funding. All applicants will be notified once the grant recipients have been determined. If you are selected to receive a grant, you will be required to complete and sign a written acknowledgment form.
Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Be an AANP member in good standing.
- Not be a member of the AANP Board of Directors or a relative of a current AANP board member or state representative.
- Not be an AANP staff member or related to an AANP staff member.
- Have an expected project completion date of no later than March 31, 2023.
- Be willing to present their project at a future AANP national conference if requested.
Types of Projects Accepted
A research or scholarly project focused on the historical foundations of the NP movement at a national or international level. AANP Grants are not intended for professional development, such as conference attendance or advanced courses and workshops. History projects should contribute novel findings to the body of existing knowledge as new, original research related to and of importance to the NP role.

AANP Indirect Cost and Funding Statements
- As a not-for-profit organization, AANP does not allocate any grant funding toward indirect costs.
- AANP will not cover indirect costs, including but not limited to salary, fringe benefits, administrative costs, etc. Please check your institution's grant policies prior to applying.
- AANP will not cover nonessential travel, including travel — and registration — to conferences for dissemination.
- AANP will not fund projects that have already been completed and disseminated.
State NP History Grant — Now Closed

The State NP History Grant is a funding opportunity to encourage individuals or groups within a state to compile historical information that focuses on a comprehensive history of the NP movement within the state. Funding is available to AANP members of any type (including student or associate members) in good standing and demonstrating expertise — or interest in — historical research.
Awardees may receive up to $1,000 in grant funding. Only completed applications will be accepted and reviewed.

A collection of historical information that focuses on a comprehensive history of the NP movement within a state. This collection can include, but is not limited to:
- Introduction and information about the state.
- Events in the history of the development of the role of NPs in the state from the inception of advanced nursing roles within the state.
- Chairs or presidents of local and state groups.
- Reimbursement History.
- NP numbers by year.
- State award winners.
- Legislative History.
- Summary of legislative efforts since the inception of the NP role.
- Guidelines for documenting and preserving materials in the state.
- Guidelines for accessing historic documents in the state.
- Prescriptive authority 1980-2020.
The state history might include information of the evolution of statutes including the nurse practice act or equivalent, nursing organizations involved in the APRN/NP movement, supervision requirements, prescriptive authority and other authorized ordering, and status of autonomous practice over time.
