Keynote Speaker

Cindy McCain: Humanitarian, Business Leader and Chairperson, The McCain Institute

Cindy Hensley McCain has dedicated her life to improving the lives of those less fortunate both in the United States and around the world. As the chairman of the Board of the McCain Institute for International Leadership at Arizona State University, she oversees the organization’s focus on advancing character-driven global leadership based on security, economic opportunity, freedom and human dignity.

McCain also chairs the Institute’s Human Trafficking Advisory Council. She cares deeply about this issue and is committed to ending human trafficking and supporting victims in Arizona, the United States and around the world. Through her work with the McCain Institute, several partnerships have been formed with anti-trafficking organizations working on solving various aspects of the problem. She also serves as co-chair of the Arizona Governor's Council on human trafficking.

In addition to her work at the McCain Institute, she serves on the Board of Directors of Project C.U.R.E and the Advisory Boards of Too Small To Fail and Warriors and Quiet Waters. McCain holds an undergraduate degree in education and a master's in special education from the University of Southern California (USC) and is a member of the USC Rossier School of Education Board of Councilors.

McCain is the chairman of her family’s business, Hensley Beverage Company, which is one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributors in the nation. She is the wife of the late U.S. Senator John McCain. Together, they have four children.

Thomas DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PPCNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP Join the Opening General Session for an interview and conversation with keynote speaker Cindy McCain, a passionate humanitarian leader, a relentless defender of women, an advocate of early childhood education and a steadfast activist in the fight against human trafficking, who will share her thoughts on the challenges that face our world today. Her dedication to improving the lives of those less fortunate in the U.S. and around the world inspires audiences everywhere to a life of service.

The Health Wagon: Leading Through A Pandemic Tuesday, June 22 2-3 p.m. ET Speakers: Teresa Tyson, DNP, FNP, MSN, FNP-BC, and Paula Hill-Collins, DNP, FNP, MSN, FNP-BC With values of inclusiveness, community outreach, collaboration, spirituality and empowerment, the Health Wagon’s mission is to provide compassionate, quality health care to the medically underserved people in the mountains of Appalachia. Forty years ago, Sister Bernadette Kenny of the Catholic Order Medical Missionaries of Mary began what is now known as the Health Wagon. At that time, Sister “Bernie,” as she is most affectionately known, traveled on rural mountain roads in her Volkswagen Beetle to deliver health care to individuals in the mountainous region of southwest Virginia. Today, the Health Wagon is the oldest mobile clinic in the nation. The Health Wagon hosts the largest health outreach of its kind in the nation (formerly Wise Remote Area Medical) and was an instrumental partner in the first ever Federal Aviation Administration-approved drone delivery of medications in the U.S., in partnership with Flirty, NASA Langley and others. Health Wagon does not bill for services and is sustained by grants and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. The Health Wagon visits 13 sites in southwest Virginia and has two stationary clinics. The Health Wagon serves the medically underserved in far southwest Virginia with primary, specialty, dental and vision care. In 2020, the Health Wagon served 6,161 unduplicated patients and documented more than 18,364 visits/encounters. The Health Wagon’s service region had some of the highest positivity rates in 2020/2021. The Health Wagon has developed Post-COVID-19 Clinics to treat patients who were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.

COVID-19 NPs Lead the Way: Part 1 Wednesday, June 23 2-3 p.m. ET Speakers: AANP President Sophia L. Thomas DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PPCNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, and AANP Incoming President April N. Kapu, DNP, APRN, ACNP- BC, FAANP, FCCM, FAAN This general session will provide an overview of several NP-led COVID-19 patient care initiatives in multiple settings, opportunities that arose and unique NP contributions. Dr. Sophia Thomas, president of AANP, will interview Dr. April Kapu, incoming president of AANP. Dr. Kapu will share her experiences with COVID-19 as she worked with NPs to begin COVID-19-associated programs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). These programs include the development of a COVID-19 hotline, pop-up COVID-19 testing sites, intensive care unit (ICU) expansion and vaccination clinics, and Dr. Kapu will highlight the innovative efforts by NPs in these programs. NPs have stepped up over and over again throughout the pandemic. The VUMC experience is just one more example of the essential contributions NPs bring to health care.

COVID-19 NPs Lead the Way: Part 2 Thursday, June 24 2-3 p.m. ET Speakers: AANP Incoming President April N. Kapu, DNP, APRN, ACNP- BC, FAANP, FCCM, FAAN; Irene Bean, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, FAANP; Jennifer Mitchell, MSN, APRN, ANP-BC; and Kipp Shipley, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC This general session will provide an opportunity to hear from three NPs who led innovative COVID-19 initiatives in the home care, long-term care, acute ICU care and community clinic settings. Dr. April Kapu, AANP president-elect, will interview: Jennifer Mitchell, who will share her experience in the development of a “COVID 2 Home” program, which allowed for COVID-19 positive patients to be treated in their home via telehealth and in-home visits by NPs. She will also speak to her “Strike Team” project, funded by the state of Tennessee, to have NPs provide on-site education and training for employees of long-term care facilities. Dr. Irene Bean, who will share her experiences throughout COVID-19, including personal protective equipment acquisition, COVID-19 testing in the community and the development of mass vaccination clinics in underserved areas. Kipp Shipley, who will share his experience as a critical care NP in VUMC’s COVID-19 ICU and will discuss not only the treatment programs but also the psychological and emotional impact of COVID-19 on families, patients and the NP team.

A Day in the Life of an NP in Full-time Practice Tuesday, July 13 2-3 p.m. ET Speakers: Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) Calling all NP students: Come meet AANP Fellows and hear about a day in the life of NPs. Learn the “ins and outs” of how to manage your practice from day to day, including time management, scheduling, documentation, review of diagnostic tests and patient call backs.

United Nations Foundation Shot@Life Campaign: Using Your Voice and Expertise to Effectively Advocate for Global Childhood Immunization Programs Tuesday, July 20 2-3 p.m. ET Speaker: Rebecca Maxie, Senior Manager, Grassroots Advocacy, United Nations Foundation The presentation will describe the current state of global vaccination coverage and challenges, identify key findings from global health organizations and agencies, discuss the role NPs can play in securing congressional support for global childhood immunization programs and outline the leadership responsibilities of people who serve as stewards for vaccines within their local communities.

Cancellations and Refunds

Cancellation requests require written notification to AANP at confcancellation@aanp.org and must be received by Monday, June 14, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. ET. If received by June 14, 2021, a refund will be issued minus a $50 administrative fee ($25 administrative fee for entry-level student registrations). After Monday, June 14, 2021, no refund will be granted. Conference registration fees are nontransferable.

The 2021 AANP National Conference registration period ended on July 30, 2021. All sessions are available to registered attendees through August 31, 2021.
