Keynote:
October 3, 3 p.m. ET
Katie Duke, MSN, ACNP-BC
Nurse Practitioner, Businesswoman and Public Figure
In this keynote, Katie Duke will speak about what professional life was like working in the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City and how she ultimately became a COVID-19 patient.
As a provider in an unfathomable situation, this was an experience that would forever shape her approach to care. How can a pandemic change your practice? How does working through a disaster affect your morale as a provider? More importantly, what happens when the provider becomes the patient?
Speaker Bio
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Duke left in her mid-20s to pursue a feeling inside her that there was “something greater out there." That feeling led her to New York City.
New York City proved to be the right move for Duke. It was the energy of the city that inspired her to find her purpose, leave a very abusive relationship, complete her education and seek out opportunities that opened up new chapters in her life.
One of those chapters was being a featured emergency room nurse on the prime-time ABC medical documentary series “NY MED” and its spinoff, “NY ER,” on the Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC and Discovery Life channels. Although she had a controversial turn on "NY Med" related to a post on social media, she realized that the best way to work through life’s tough lessons is to own your mistakes. For the last six years, she has been dedicated to leading others by sharing her good and bad experiences and lessons and by empowering others to embrace and grow from their not-so-glorious moments.
Fireside Chat With the Surgeon General:
October 17, 3 p.m. ET
VADM Jerome M. Adams
Surgeon General of the United States of America
The Surgeon General sits down for a fireside-style chat with AANP President Dr. Sophia L. Thomas.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Jerome Adams is the 20th Surgeon General of the United States. His mission as the “Nation’s Doctor,” is to advance the health of the American people. Dr. Adams’ motto as Surgeon General is “better health through better partnerships.” He is committed to strengthening relationships with all members of the health community and forging new partnerships with members from the business, faith, education, public safety and national security communities.
As the Surgeon General, Dr. Adams holds the rank of Vice Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In this capacity, he oversees the operations of approximately 6,500 uniformed health officers who serve in nearly 800 locations around the world, promoting, protecting and advancing the health and safety of our nation.

Veronica Wilbur and Juliette G. Blount
Saturday, September 12, 3 p.m. ET
Race, Equity and Inclusion in Health Care: Understanding the Impact Beyond the Checkbox In the United States, the health care of all populations is affected by clinicians’ lack of understanding of race, and the impact that implicit bias has on the inequities in healthcare that disproportionately impact diverse populations. As nurse practitioners, it is critical to understand our own implicit bias can affect how we care for patients.
This session features an open dialogue about how implicit biases shape our actions and what can be done in clinical practice to enhance the patient care experience.
