A Message From the Endocrine Community Co-chairs

Shannon Idzik, DNP, CRNP, FAANP, FAAN

I am excited to serve as the co-chair for the Endocrine Community. I currently practice in an outpatient chronic disease clinic, providing outpatient care to recently discharged patients at high risk for readmission, largely focusing on patients with diabetes. My passion for caring for patients with endocrine disease started more than 25 years ago as a critical care nurse, grew during my time as an full-time NP working in endocrinology and continued through many years in various outpatient practices. I am currently finishing up service on a federal advisory board, the National Clinical Care Commission. The commission is charged with making recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human services and Congress focused on prevention of diabetes and care of patients with diabetes. When I am not seeing patients, I am the Associate Dean of the DNP program at University of Maryland School of Nursing.

I am sure many of you, like me, share a love, ease and passion for caring for patients with endocrine disease. Others of you might have less comfort and are here looking for resources to gain proficiency in a complex subject. You are all in the right pyoutlace! Welcome to the Endocrine Community! I look forward to collaborating with all of you, meeting you in person and through the forum.

I have been working in the field of diabetes and general endocrinology for over 30 years, and I am equally excited to be working with Shannon Idzik as co-chair again. We have worked together at the University of Maryland for many years and share our passion for all things endocrine. I previously served as the assistant dean for graduate programs at the University of MD School of Nursing and held my faculty practice at the Diabetes/Endocrine Center at the University of MD Medical Center where I led numerous practice and research initiatives.

I currently work as an NP and Director of Diabetes at a private practice in Maryland outside of Washington DC. I travel to all three of our clinics to reach all the patients and ensure they have access to advanced technologies such as CGM, insulin delivery devices, smart pens and insulin pumps. I created and now manage our “Center for Type 1 Diabetes” at one of the locations where we provide resources for patients requiring more advanced care. I have extensive experience in research and publishing, and I continue to teach nationally, regionally, and locally for numerous groups including AANP at the Annual conference and Fall Conference. I also teach and serve as faculty for an online transition to practice program for new NPs and PAs.
