National Nurses Month is a time for nurse practitioners (NPs) to join with millions of providers, patients and more in recognizing the lifesaving, supportive, inspirational work of nurses. The celebration lasts all of May and is an opportunity to spotlight all nurses — including the next generation of health care providers.
New NPs and NP students have the support of their professional organization. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) offers a number of resources available to members anywhere, anytime to prepare future and new NPs for education and successful practice — from video presentations to student-centric continuing education (CE), discounts on certification and more.
NPs beginning clinical rotations will benefit from viewing preceptor and faculty expectation checklists. A collaboration between AANP and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, these checklists “offer evidence-based suggestions on creating a healthy, ongoing relationship and reducing barriers experienced by the clinical preceptor, NP faculty or the NP student.”
AANP’s website also features a “Student Resources” section, featuring information and guidance for prospective NPs. This section includes “Planning Your NP Education,” “Starting Your NP Career,” “NP Certification” and much more. Several video resources available under this section dive into topics like preparing a competitive application and selecting an NP program.
NPs who have recently completed their education will find guidance and employment assistance through AANP’s “Staring Your NP Career” page, which features the AANP Job Center, videos on the transition to clinical practice, information on state practice information, malpractice insurance and other topics relevant to new NPs.
The 2023 AANP National Conference includes several presentations focused on NP students. Student members of AANP receive the most affordable rates on conference admission — with savings of more than 600 dollars compared to nonmember rates.
One especially relevant presentation for NP students is “Make Your Best First Impression: Leveraging Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) as Part of Your Professional Portfolio.” An NP’s CV “reflects who you are and what you bring to the table,” according to the presentation description, and attendees “will learn the vital components needed to develop a CV as part of a professional portfolio.” This presentation “is relevant for any NP or student, regardless of background or professional setting.”
Another 2023 AANP National Conference presentation aimed specifically at NP students is “Using a Multi-Modal Framework to Design and Implement a Telehealth Educational Program.” Featuring speaker Jeanne Moore, DNP, FNP-BC, the NP student-centric presentation will focus on “a multi-modal telehealth educational program for NP students with four focus areas: didactic education, experiential simulations, clinical telehealth experiences, and telehealth projects.”
AANP is here for you at every step of your educational and professional journey. Join AANP today to begin accessing the guidance, scholarship and financial benefits available to members. Students enrolled in an entry level program that prepares students with no prior NP education may join AANP for $55 annually, and certified NPs enrolled in school for further education may join for $95.
