Congress has cancelled votes for this week due to memorial services for former President George H.W. Bush, who died on Friday, November 30. President Bush will lie in state in the United States Capitol Rotunda, and the public can pay their respects to the 41st President until 8:45 a.m. ET Wednesday morning. The memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. ET at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. President Trump has designated this Wednesday, December 5, as a national day of mourning.
On December 3, 2018, the Trump Administration announced the release of its report entitled Reforming America’s Healthcare System Through Choice and Competition. The report is in response to an October 2017 Executive Order that called for the development of a health care system that provides high-quality care at affordable prices by promoting choice and competition. While the report contains some 50 recommendations, it is important to note that it highlights the anticompetitive nature of scope of practice laws. Among the recommendations is that states should consider changes to their scope of practice statutes to allow all health care providers to practice to the top of their licenses. AANP is encouraged to see that the Administration recognizes the value of NP-provided health care and has recommended removing unnecessary practice restrictions. We will continue to review the report and will provide additional information once we have completed our review.
AANP encourages you to continue to reach out to your members of Congress and urge them to support these key legislative issues impacting NP practice. As NPs and constituents, your voices matter and need to be heard in these last legislative weeks of the 115th Congress.
