Since the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world on its head, the AANP community has not been able to convene in person — a precaution to ensure the safety and health of attendees and conference staff. As more individuals around the country get vaccinated and cases continue to decline, nurse practitioners (NPs) are now cordially invited to gather together once again.
AANP is pleased to announce the return of in-person events with the 2021 AANP Fall Conference! Earn continuing education (CE) credit, explore exhibit booths from leading health care organizations and health tech companies, find opportunities for collegial networking with hundreds of NPs and enjoy the ocean breeze from the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida. This conference will offer six topical areas and more than 80 sessions for diverse, advanced learning opportunities.
The 2021 AANP Fall Conference topical areas help you select the CE sessions that match your interests. Within each topical area, you can choose from a number of sessions on a variety of therapeutic areas. You can even mix and match sessions from five of the six topical areas to create your personalized conference experience. Explore the six topical areas below and start planning your perfect conference schedule:
Business and Professional
Have you ever considered working beyond the bedside in nursing? As an NP, the options are endless:
Sessions in the Business and Professional topical area will focus on the exciting career opportunities available to NPs, with sessions ranging from those on evaluation and management (E&M) coding to others on income diversification, tax strategies and risk taking.
Cardiometabolic
Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is a widely recognized syndrome inclusive of a combination of metabolic dysfunctions, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension and obesity. These states have been identified as risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic disease. This topical area will explore the spectrum of factors — including environments, diets, lifestyles, genetic and epigenetic factors — that may combine to cause any one of the cardiometabolic diseases.
Sessions in the Cardiometabolic topical area will examine current evidence, treatment modalities across the spectrum and new developments in identifying CMS, as well as the intersections between the nuances of cardiometabolic illnesses and wellness.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
AANP is committed to empowering all NPs to advance high-quality, equitable health care while addressing health disparities, inequities and systemic racism through practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership. Through critical dialogue and knowledge exchange, participants in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion topical area will have the opportunity to assess, evaluate and reflect on their current practice while exploring transformative shifts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, social justice and health equity. The goal is to provide a professional development forum for NPs, across multiple practice settings, to:
Sessions in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion topical area cover a variety of topics, including social determinants of health, inclusive health care for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, implicit provider bias and allyship.
Pharmacology
This is where you can explore advanced concepts in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, with specific attention to their clinical implications. Individual sessions within this Pharmacology topical area are designed to present the latest advances among a wide variety of contemporary clinical topics of relevance for NPs from all practice settings. Building upon the evidence-based foundation of early practice, these sessions include a higher-level analysis and application of clinical and diagnostic indicators as a foundation for managing complex patients or those who do not otherwise respond to classic, evidence-based drug regimens.
Sessions in the Pharmacology topical area contain information on COVID-19 vaccines, medication-assisted treatment, the legal implications of opioid prescribing, pharmacology for specific conditions and pharmacogenetics.
Psychiatric-Mental Health
Did you know that patients often view the primary care setting as more acceptable or accessible for mental health care than a specialty setting? As a result, primary care NPs are often on the front lines for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. Research trials consistently demonstrate the effectiveness of integrated care for mental disorders. Even so, primary care providers and systems are overburdened, and patients benefit when clinicians possess the knowledge, confidence and authority to practice to the full scope of their NP roles. This topical area provides information to improve the delivery of mental health services in primary care; likewise, it enhances and extends the skill set for the competent mental health provider.
Sessions in the Psychiatric-Mental Health topical area will examine mental health essentials every NP should know, common medications, trauma-informed care and various therapeutic interventions, as well as sessions on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, cannabis and deprescribing.
Leadership
NPs are leaders in the health care field, and leadership training is crucial to increase your effectiveness and to drive positive change in the way health care is delivered. The Leadership topical area is designed to deepen your emotional intelligence, creativity, capacity for communication, transformational leadership skills, understanding of systems and ability to support and motivate others.
This is the only fall conference topical area that must be taken in its entirety. Selecting one Leadership session will automatically register you for all 12 sessions in this topical area; selecting just one session or a few sessions without completing all 12 is not permitted. This will ensure that those who complete all 12 sessions will receive a certificate of completion, which is a requirement for AANP members who are interested in applying for the AANP Executive Leadership Program.
Sessions in the Leadership topical area are designed to help NPs take their leadership skills to the next level and range from communication strategies, leadership styles and time management to emotional intelligence and leadership ethics.
