August is when we recognize National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), which highlights the important work of health care providers as they encourage and explain the importance of on-time immunization. Nurse practitioners (NPs), in particular, are in a unique position to encourage vaccinations. According to The Journal for Nurse Practitioners (JNP), NPs can “improve vaccination rates by developing a trusting relationship with parents and being armed with information based on sound clinical evidence.”
A study in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) supports this, with findings indicating that NP-managed patients in two NP-owned clinics had higher immunization rates than the national average across five major vaccines.
This NIAM, find continuing education (CE), resources for your patients, evidence-based articles and toolkits to help you make a positive difference in your community.
In addition, AANP offers a Meningococcal Vaccine Information Tent for you to use in your practice. This printable resource can be placed in your waiting room or exam rooms to educate patients, and the parents of younger patients, about meningococcal disease prevention.
