National Immunization Awareness Month: How Do You Recommend Vaccinations?

Powerto Protect NIAM

Join the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) in putting a stop to vaccine-preventable diseases.

August is when we recognize National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), which highlights the important work of health care providers as they encourage and explain the importance of on-time immunization. Nurse practitioners (NPs), in particular, are in a unique position to encourage vaccinations. According to The Journal for Nurse Practitioners (JNP), NPs can “improve vaccination rates by developing a trusting relationship with parents and being armed with information based on sound clinical evidence.”

A study in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) supports this, with findings indicating that NP-managed patients in two NP-owned clinics had higher immunization rates than the national average across five major vaccines.

Practice Tools From AANP

AANP offers a Meningococcal Vaccine Information Tent for you to use in your practice. This printable resource can be placed in your waiting room or exam rooms to educate patients, and the parents of younger patients, about meningococcal disease prevention.

AANP's two-page HPV Patient Handout provides a summary of HPV and HPV-related cancers. It can be printed and placed in waiting and exam rooms or provided to patients so that they, and parents of adolescent patients, will be encouraged to discuss HPV prevention with their health care provider.
