New York Makes Progress on Health Care Proxies

Government Affairs Newsfeed

Last week, Governor Cuomo signed Senate Bill 7713, which makes changes to health care proxies signed into law. These changes will amend Chapter 432 of the Public Health Law to include nurse practitioners (NPs) among the providers who may make a determination of incapacity for the purposes of invoking a health care proxy. The law also provides for NPs to act as a witness for a health care proxy and provides parallel parameters for both NPs and physicians. This act takes effect on the 90th day from the date of signature.

AANP celebrates the hard work of New York Nurse Practitioners to advance policies that empower patients and make it easier for NPs to practice. This is a victory for patient access to the provider of their choice and helps ensure patient wishes are followed. Kudos to everyone who helped bring about this change.
