Continue Using Your Nurse Practitioner (NP) Voice

A group of NPs and AANP members stand next to a screen showing that they are Shot@Life Champions

Although 2020 NP Week has come to a close, you are encouraged to join The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner® in advocating for crucial legislative and regulatory changes and to raise your own voice in support of issues that are of critical importance to NPs and patients.

As the nation celebrated NP Week (November 8–14, 2020), countless patients, legislators, NPs and other health care providers joined the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) as we advocated on behalf of NPs and patients. This immense support resulted in NP Week messages being seen by millions of people worldwide.

There is tremendous strength and rich diversity represented by the collective voices of more than 290,000 NPs who are licensed to practice in the United States. As the health care providers of choice for millions of Americans, NPs are uniquely positioned to represent their patients and advocate for their patients’ needs to policymakers at local, state and national levels. Additionally, during the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, the advocacy work NPs do and the care they provide on a global scale has come into greater focus.

Read on to see how you can get involved and increase the positive impact you make in the lives of patients in your state, at the federal level and even internationally.

Learn More About Your State Practice Environment

As The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®, AANP champions modernized laws and improved health policies for NPs in every state. NP Week is an opportune time to learn more about your state practice environment and how AANP’s state policy priorities could impact your practice and your patients.

AANP members get more, including access to AANP’s State Policy Tracker, where you can track legislation by state or topic right alongside AANP’s expert staff. Additional member benefits include access to State Policy Maps to help you explore topics, such as prescriptive authority for controlled substances, signature authorization, primary care provider recognition and more, in greater depth. Explore the State Advocacy section of AANP’s website for quick access to these valuable resources, state practice information by state and state policy fact sheets that will keep you informed and support your advocacy efforts.

Gain Health Policy Knowledge and Add Your Voice to Effect Positive Change

AANP members have exclusive access to a variety of advocacy tools, including the weekly Government Affairs Update electronic newsletter, which keeps members appraised of regulatory and legislative changes as they occur. Articles in the newsletter link to a wealth of information that is imperative to NP practice, so be sure to add the Government Affairs Newsletter to your weekly reading list. Additional advocacy resources include position statements, policy briefs and a wealth of policy updates related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adding your voice to NP advocacy efforts takes just moments through the AANP Advocacy Center, where you can sign up for alerts, search for legislation, locate your elected officials and send them a message urging action on federal policy issues that impact your practice and your patients’ health. Visit the Advocacy Center now to thank your legislators for supporting patients and health care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic and to ask for their support on specific legislation.

Get Involved in Efforts to Improve Health Care on a Global Scale

NPs lead — domestically and abroad. By participating in medical mission trips, being involved with global vaccination efforts and collaborating with advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) worldwide, NPs are advancing practice and improving patients’ access to high-quality care.

A prime example of the global impact that NPs can have is demonstrated by AANP’s partnership with Shot@Life, which is a program of the United Nations Foundation. NPs are invited to become Shot@Life Champions and gain the training and education they need to advocate for vaccinations globally and build relationships with other vaccination advocates. You can now become a Shot@Life Champion by attending the Shot@Life training available through AANPconnect: An Online Conference Experience. Hear from AANP members who have become Shot@Life Champions and shared their impactful experiences:

During 2020: The International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, AANP is highlighting NPs’ international efforts to advance health care delivery. Share your experiences abroad with AANP to be considered for inclusion in a compilation of stories that highlight the impact NPs have made worldwide.
