What Type of AANP Membership Do You Need?
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) offers six different membership categories. Here’s how to determine which category fits you best.

With 121,000, AANP helps to positively shape the health care landscape and represents nurse practitioners (NPs) of every specialty — and their patients — in dialog with key stakeholders across the United States.
AANP offers six membership categories, ranging from NP Student to Associate (non-NP). With that in mind, how do you select the appropriate category to match your experience level? How do you take advantage of AANP’s abundant member benefits?

If you are currently a licensed, practicing NP ...
You should select NP member. To join AANP as an NP member, you must have successfully completed an accredited NP program and be currently certified as an NP by a nationally approved certifying body.
- As an NP member, you may vote in the annual AANP elections for officers of the board of directors (BOD), the nomination council, regional directors and state representatives.
- NP members who are interested in seeking elected office — at the national or state level — must have 12 months of uninterrupted membership and be in good standing (as of the date on which the Call for Nominations opens).
- NP members receive the most comprehensive Member Benefits, including but not limited to participation in the Multistate Reimbursement Alliance (MSRA) and NP Finder, invitations to join AANP Communities, discounts on clinical reference tools and AANP conference registration, online access to both the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (JAANP) and The Journal for Nurse Practitioners (JNP).
If you are currently studying to become an NP ...
As a student, you have two options, depending on your level of experience.
You should select Student member if you are currently enrolled in an accredited, entry-level program that is designed for students who have no prior NP education. Examples include master's and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs or the NP portion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)-to-DNP program.
- As a Student member, you may vote in the annual AANP elections for your state representative(s).
- Student members who are interested in holding AANP state office must hold 12 months of uninterrupted membership and be in good standing.
- Your Student Member Benefits include but are not limited to online access to JAANP, online access to JNP, free access to the AANP CE Center, discounts on AANP conference registration and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) applications and opportunities for exclusive AANP grants and scholarships. In comparison to NP members, Student members are not able to add practice sites to NP Finder, are not able to join the MSRA and are not eligible for savings through Mercer Consumer or Health Monitor.
You should select Licensed NP Student member if you are currently an NP enrolled in school for further education, such as a post master's certificate, Doctor of Nursing Practice or PhD program.
- As a Licensed NP Student member, you may vote in the annual AANP elections for officers of the BOD, the nomination council, regional directors and state representatives.
- Licensed NP Student members who are interested in holding AANP national or state office must have 12 months of uninterrupted membership and be in good standing.
- Your Licensed NP Student Member Benefits include all member benefits available to NP members, which includes but is not limited to access to both journals, continuing education (CE) and discounts on insurance, clinical reference tools, AANP conferences and AANPCB applications.
If you are a new graduate and are just beginning your NP career ...
You should select Career Starter member. For this membership category, you should be in the first year of your career as a licensed NP, meaning you should have graduated from an NP program within the previous 12 months. You may enjoy one year of Career Starter membership, after which you may renew as an NP member or Post Master’s Student member.
- As a Career Starter member, you may vote in the annual AANP elections for officers of the BOD, the nomination council, regional directors and state representatives.
- Career Starter members who are interested in holding AANP national or state office must have 12 months of uninterrupted membership and be in good standing.
- Your Career Starter Member Benefits include but are not limited to online access to JAANP, online access to JNP, free access to the AANP CE Center, discounts on AANP conference registration and AANPCB applications and opportunities for exclusive AANP grants and scholarships. In comparison to NP members, Career Starter members are not able to add practice sites to NP Finder.
If you have retired from your NP career ...
You should select Retired NP member. This will allow you to continue advocating for the NP role, influence the future direction of AANP in annual elections and stay up to date on the latest health care news.
- As a Retired NP member, you may vote in the annual AANP elections for officers of the BOD, the nomination council, regional directors and state representatives.
- Retired NP members who are interested in holding AANP state office must have 12 months of uninterrupted membership and be in good standing.
- Your Retired NP Member Benefits include but are not limited to online access to JAANP, online access to JNP, free subscriptions to AANP SmartBrief and E-Bulletin, discounts on AANP conference registration and clinical reference tools and invitations to join AANP Communities.
If you are not a practicing NP, retired NP or NP student ...
You should select Associate member. Thank you for your interest in supporting the NP role and for your belief in the AANP mission!
- As an Associate member, you may not vote in the annual AANP elections.
- Associate members are not able to hold AANP national or state office.
- Your Associate Member Benefits include but are not limited to online access to JAANP, online access to JNP, free access to AANP SmartBrief and E-Bulletin, discounts on AANP conference registration and insurance through Mercer Consumer and invitations to join AANP Communities. In comparison to NP members, Associate members are not able to add practice sites to NP Finder or join the MSRA and are not eligible for savings on clinical reference tools or exam room posters from Health Monitor.
