NPs in the News

Dr. Susan Apold Participates in New Democrat Coalition Health Care Task Force Panel

On July 17, AANP Board of Directors Member-at-Large and Chair of the Federal Health Policy Committee Susan Apold, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN, participated in a members-only briefing for the New Democrat Coalition's Health Care Task Force to discuss providers' perspectives regarding the impact that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act will have on their practices. Dr. Apold was joined on the panel by Dr. Craig Wright, Senior Vice President for Physician Services Providence Health and Systems, and Richard Umbdenstock, CEO of the American Hospital Association.

During the panel, Dr. Apold explained the need for NPs to be fully included in the insurance exchanges and ACOs. She detailed the federal barriers that NPs encounter while providing care (e.g. hospice, home health, skilled nursing). In addition, she described the unintended consequences of the ACA's DME face-to-face regulation, which takes effect October 1st. The panel also afforded Dr. Apold the opportunity to detail the differences in scope of practice between states that impact the level of care NPs can provide.

This panel, chaired by Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR), Rep. Bill Owens (D-NY), and Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) provided AANP the chance to speak directly to Members of Congress regarding the level of exceptional care NPs provide their patients and the barriers that prevent NPs from practicing to the full scope of their clinical education and expertise. Dr. Apold was an impressive member of the panel, and we thank her for doing such a great job representing AANP and all nurse practitioners.
