AANP Convenes Largest Annual Conference for Nurse Practitioners

Donna Shalala, Larry King, Loretta Ford and Jan Towers among featured speakers

AUSTIN, TX (June 13, 2013)
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), will kick off its 2013 National Conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday, June 19. This is the largest annual gathering of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the country, bringing together more than 5,500 NPs from every corner of the United States for 350 concurrent sessions, approximately 40 skill enhancement workshops and the largest exhibit hall in AANP conference history. The conference this year includes nine featured tracks, discussions on current national, state and local legislative, regulatory and practice issues, as well as international and national opportunities for networking. There is something for everyone at the 2013 conference, from the NP student to the experienced nurse practitioner.

The conference opening keynote speaker is Dr. Donna Shalala, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Dr. Shalala chaired the Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee that released the 2010 report, The Future of Nursing, Leading Change, Advancing Health, which recommends easing restrictions on NPs nationwide. Just this month, Nevada passed legislation that follows these recommendations, retiring regulations that constrained a patient's ability to obtain prescriptions from a qualified nurse practitioner unless that clinician maintained a regulated agreement with an individual physician.

Special programming on Wednesday evening features legendary interviewer Larry King, who will sit down with two NP legends, Dr. Loretta Ford, co-founder of the NP role, and Dr. Jan Towers, a founding member of AANP and health policy expert, to discuss the lives and careers of these important figures and the future of the profession.

"We are thrilled to welcome our NP colleagues and invite them to take full advantage of everything the conference has to offer," said Angela Golden, president of AANP. "This year's theme, 'Shaping the Future, Celebrating the Past,' signifies the tremendous accomplishments achieved by NPs and our resolve to keep working toward an improved health care system that allows us to deliver best possible patient care."

AANP's National Conference takes place June 19-23, 2013 at The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Additional details are available on the AANP National Conference page.
