AANP President Responds to Secretary of Veterans Affairs McDonald's Announcement

AUSTIN, TX (September 8, 2014) In response to Secretary of Veterans Affairs McDonald's announcement today, AANP president Ken P. Miller, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP, issued the following statement:

"Further protecting those who've fought for our country requires that the VA makes more effective use of its nurse practitioners, clinicians who provide high-quality care in every community across the country and can offer care for our veterans in any health care setting.

"We thus urge Secretary McDonald to increase the number of nurse practitioner positions throughout the VA system; broaden the pipeline that enables nurse practitioners to enter the VA; and remove barriers to practice so that nurse practitioners at the VA can practice to the full extent of their education and clinical expertise regardless of where they live and work.

"We thank Secretary McDonald for the action taken to protect and preserve the health of those who've served in uniform."
