Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives

AUSTIN, TX (January 21, 2016) -- The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) congratulates Representative Linda Upmeyer on her swearing in as Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives. Speaker Upmeyer, a certified nurse practitioner, is an AANP member and the first nurse practitioner to hold the office. During her tenure in the House, AANP has partnered with Speaker Upmeyer to address a variety of health care issues important to nurse practitioners and their patients.

"As a nurse practitioner and as Speaker of the Iowa House, I have dedicated my life's work to finding positive solutions that meet the health care needs of Iowa's families. I am proud to represent the great state of Iowa where nurse practitioners can practice to the full scope of their education and training, and Iowans can benefit from access to their care." said Speaker Linda Upmeyer.

"Speaker Upmeyer has been a longtime champion of patients, from the state house to the hospital floor. We're delighted that such an outstanding legislator and nurse practitioner has been named Speaker, and we look forward to working with her to advance policies that strengthen patient access to high quality, affordable health care delivered by their provider of choice," said AANP President Cindy Cooke, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP.

In June, Speaker Upmeyer will receive AANP's 2016 State Award for Excellence, an annual award that recognizes outstanding leadership in the advancement of health care policy and the profession.

"We look forward to presenting Speaker Upmeyer with this well-deserved recognition, and thanking her for her stalwart efforts on behalf of patients and nurse practitioners across our state. Her input each year on our Iowa Legislation Day has been very beneficial as well as her help on grassroots issues," said AANP's Iowa State Representative Sherry McKay, ARNP, GNP-BC, FAANP.
