American Association of Nurse Practitioners reaches 70,000 member milestone

AUSTIN, TX (October 12 , 2016) – The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), today announced it has reached the milestone of 70,000 members. AANP is the largest national membership organization for nurse practitioners of all specialties. From its inception in 1985 as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners with a membership of 100 NPs, through the merger with the American College of Nurse Practitioners in 2013, the organization has maintained steady annual double digit growth.

NP student members, who make up more than a quarter of the membership population, show the importance of a professional membership organization to those who are just embarking on the NP journey. Providing membership categories for all stages of the NP profession, AANP guides NPs throughout their career with research, education, advocacy and leadership.

"We stay in touch with our members through surveys and personal outreach. In this way, we can continue to provide the tools, products and services that are needed for our members to remain the health care providers of choice for millions of patients," said AANP President Cindy Cooke, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP. "AANP offers a multitude of benefits including free CE activities, online specialty practice groups, free subscriptions to journals, legislative representation at federal and state levels, up-to-date news on health care topics, and many more resources for the NP profession."

AANP represents the interests of more than 222,000 NPs, including approximately 70,000 individual members and 200 organizations. The organization provides legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients and other health care consumers. As The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®, AANP represents the interests of NPs as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered health care.
